Breed registers:

It is highly recommended that each curly owner in Finland registers their horse with the Finnish Trotting and Breeding Association Suomen Hippos Ry in addition to either the ABCR or ICHO breed registries.

American Bashkir Curly Registry (ABCR)

Established in 1971 to save this exceptional horse breed from extinction.By May 2005, there were over 3000 American Bashkir Curly horses worldwide, most of which are in North America.ABCR strives to preserve the originality of the breed. To accomplish this, owners of curly horses were asked to list the characteristics unique to the Curly horse.Once this information had been compiled, several interested facts about the breed wee revealed.Registered horses are more uniform in type, because the association has its own breed standards. The registry closed the studbook which assisted in the pursuit of the notion of a "pure breed", because people were concerned how all the crossbreeding had diluted the original characteristics of the Curly.By issuing restrictions (rule changes) attempts are made to preserve the properties of the breed.Straight-haired studs were no longer used for breeding, and a rule change came into force in 1999 – 2000.Consequently, the ABC registry keepers request for all straight-haired studs to be gelded, in order for the Curly’s most visible breed characteristic, its curly hair, to be preserved.Even if the offspring of a straight-haired stallion would have curly hair, all its offspring carry the straight-haired gene. All half stallions (½, ¾, 7/8, etc.) born after 1 January 2006 are not eligible for breeding, and gelding is recommended.Nowadays there are plenty of pure breed, curly-haired Curly stallions, so breeding does not permit the use of straight-haired horses or half breeds. The registry has its own newsletter for members, Curly Cues.

International Curly Horse Organization (ICHO)

Established in 2000 and received registration of over 800 horses by 2005.The ICHO registers all curly horses, also the individuals that do not conform to the original breed standards of ABCR.It is an open register for all horses carrying the Curly genes, regardless of whether or not the parents are registered. The registry approves all outside breeds for breeding. The horses registered with ICHO are called North American Curly Horses.Registered horses have many different types of build, they can be miniature ponies or large workhorses and all the breeds in between. However, the horse should have a well-proportioned build and a pleasant disposition.
